About the Virginia DWR

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources is responsible for the management and protection of Wildlife of Lake Shenandoah. Below is a presentation of some of the overarching aspects that are important to recognize in the role and structure of the Virginia DWR.

I would also like to shine a light on their "Restore the Wild" membership, which is what I purchased to view and explore the trails along Lake Shenandoah. 100% of funds with this membership go to supporting restoration and protection of wildlife habitats in Virginia. 2023 is the fifth year of the implementation of this membership with over $150,000 in funds raised and 2,000 members to support management of over 250,000 acres of land and waterbodies.

There are 3 levels of this membership:

  1. Hummingbird which includes one year of access to the DWR’s Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and Lakes (which makes the membership well worth it as I have already been kayaking) a biannual newsletter and a vinyl sticker (see image below).

  2. Bluebird includes everything in the Hummingbird membership as well as a years subscription to Virginia Wildlife Magazine, and a Restore the Wild field notebook.

  3. Golden Eagle includes everything in the Bluebird membership as well as an Art Print from the Restore the Wild Artwork Competition, and priority registration for DWR-sponsored events

I encourage you to check out the Restore the Wild Membership Page and consider purchasing a membership to support our local Virginia Wildlife!
